What is Chimney Pointing and Why Does It Fail?
Chimney pointing refers to the mortar joints between the brickwork of a chimney stack. Over time, freeze-thaw cycles, acid rain, and UV exposure cause mortar to crack, shrink, and fall away. Once the pointing fails, water penetrates the stack — leading to damp patches on internal walls and ceilings, spalling brickwork, and eventually structural instability.
Chimney flaunching is the sloped mortar bed at the top of the chimney stack that holds pot bases and directs rainwater away. Flaunching cracks and breaks away over time, allowing water to pool around pot bases and seep down through the stack. Failed flaunching is extremely common on older properties across Leeds and West Yorkshire — it is one of the most frequently missed sources of roof-level damp.

Our Chimney Repair Process
All chimney pointing and flaunching work in Leeds starts safely — we erect scaffold or use a cherry picker where required, ensuring stable, safe access throughout. We never work from ladders for chimney repairs.
For repointing: we rake out failed mortar to a minimum depth of 15mm before applying new mortar matched to the existing mix and profile. Soft lime mortars are used on older Victorian properties to prevent moisture trapping in the masonry — a critical detail missed by contractors who use modern cement mixes on historic brickwork.
For flaunching repairs: we cut back all cracked and loose material, clean the surface, prime, and apply a new flaunching bed formed correctly to shed water away from pot bases. We reset or replace chimney pots where required, including new lead skirts.
