Why Leadwork Matters for Your Roof

Lead flashings are the waterproof seals at the most vulnerable points of any roof: where the roof meets a wall or chimney (abutment flashings), where two roof slopes meet (valley gutters), where pipes penetrate the roof (soakers and pipe flashings), and around skylights and roof windows. These junctions cannot be reliably sealed with cement mortar, silicone, or felt — only correctly formed lead provides lasting weather exclusion.

Lead lasts 50–100 years when correctly installed and maintained — far longer than any proprietary flashing tape or sealant product. But when lead is incorrectly fixed, develops fatigue cracks, or is simply old and work-hardened, it fails — and the resulting water ingress is often mistaken for tile or structural failure by less experienced contractors across Leeds and West Yorkshire.

ProMax Roofing’s directors Paul and Lee have 15 years of leadwork experience and diagnose lead-related water ingress accurately, saving clients across West Yorkshire from expensive, unnecessary re-roofing. We work to BS EN 12588 lead standards on all new installations.

Lead Flashing Repairs & New Installations

ProMax handles the full range of leadwork in Leeds and West Yorkshire: from minor flashing repairs to complete lead valley linings on Victorian properties.

Chimney leadwork is the most common repair — back gutters, side flashings, and front aprons all need correct lead forming and step flashing into brickwork joints. We cut and dress lead to British Standard code thickness for each application: Code 3 for soakers, Code 4 for cover flashings, Code 5 for valleys and back gutters.

Valley leadwork on slate and tile roofs requires careful forming to shed the high water volumes that run down valley lines. We remove existing failed valleys, reposition tiles, form and fix new lead linings with correct underlaps, and dress the lead edges over tile courses to prevent wind uplift.

We also carry out flat roof leadwork for dormers and bay windows — box gutters, parapet cap flashings, and overflow details. Related services: chimney pointing and flaunching, slate and tile roofing, and gutter replacement. Serving Leeds, Bradford, Wakefield, and Harrogate.
